Make every ski trip worth taking
Make every ski trip worth taking
A ski day or trip with a group of friends to the slopes should be memorable. I provide pre-trip planning to ensure you get the details right. Once there, I provide "ski with a local" adventure leading, mountain guiding, on snow coaching, equipment consulting, and more.
Doug began skiing when he 3 years old in Vermont and lived at Round Top Ski Area in Plymouth Union, VT. After college racing at the University of Colorado, he extended his experience to extreme skiing all over Colorado. After leaving Colorado in the 90's, Doug turned to traveling and skiing while pursuing a career in high school eduction and beginning a family in CT. After leading a successful ed-tech start up, Doug "retired" at 57 years old to Hideout, Utah to get back to the mountains and share the passion with friends.
Leading with adventure in mind. The day always starts with first chair. I'll guide you from the start, but plan to be moving fast. We'll hit the morning spots and be charging to get our 10,000 feet of vertical by 10:15am. If it's a powder day, we will be making tracks to get the best face shots. I'll provide some on snow coaching to make the flying a bit more fun. We will talk equipment and all things skiing on the ride up, but we won't take many breaks on the way down. We'll look to upgrade our technique, but never at the expense of making turns and getting a full day of skiing in.
Trip planning begins with picking a destination that fits your priorities. Whether it's a powder chase or a search for spring sunshine, I'll help you identify priorities and select the best destination with the best chance for the dates. I can provide insight on location for lodging and more. I'll meet you there (see below on where I travel to) and lead your day of skiing so you don't have to search the trail map and waste time hunting for the best line. I can do 1 - 5 day trips for as much skiing and fun as you can have - without all the stress.
I live in Hideout, Utah and ski about 100 days a year among Deer Valley, Park City, Snowbird/Alta, other Utah areas, and Colorado. I recommend if you are going to Powder Mountain, Utah - hire their guides. I have skied all over Colorado, but especially the Aspen areas, Vail, Breckinridge, and Steamboat. I am very familiar with the Summit County, CO areas including Breckenridge, Copper, and A-Basin. I am less confident with Keystone, Telluride, and Crested Butte. I do not offer services for California or New Mexico at this time. I do travel with groups to Europe, but cannot offer the same level of local knowledge.
How many times have you come back from a ski trip, and heard, "... but you didn't ski ____?" Or you wasted the first hour of a powder day skiing in tracks because you didn't set out on the right course. Let a concierge get you to the best places fast and find the right lines for any conditions. Let's discuss your equipment once we are skiing and talk about the alignment between your gear and your skiing. Have confidence in the best fit for YOUR individual style by someone who is knowledgable and has skied with you.
Active, aggressive, advanced intermediate and above skiers who want to get the most out of their day on the slopes. You want a concierge skiing with you who is an experienced skier and has traveled the world. Your time is limited, so you want to spend it with people who you can relate to and enjoy without bravado and showmanship. You want to be challenged and pushed, but not shoved. Being 59 and a successful entrepreneur outside of the ski world, allows me to connect with my clients on life experiences beyond the slopes as well. As one of my clients said, "You are neither a ski bum or a bum who skies!" There will be thigh burn, but there will be laughter too.
Sometimes, you don't share the vibe with a person. If we don't mesh, no problem we can ski off separately. You'll go on with your ski day with no cost to you. If you are looking for a leisurely day on the slopes with a one hour lunch at 11:45 and frequent stops on the trail - not for you. I don't give ski lessons, so if you need instruction, the ski resorts I go to have excellent ski schools with trained instructors. If you want someone to take you to places you don't want to ski and get hurt - follow the guy with the avalanche airbag on his back. I am not an experienced backcountry guide and don't pretend to be. I can refer you to qualified guides and companies that specialize in those experiences. Finally, I'd rather ski than burn powder turns taking videos - just sayin'.
Let's pick the best destination for you based on budget, goals, and time of year. We'll do the best to maximize your chances of having great skiing, limiting crowded times and places, and getting the most out of your trip. I can help with restaurants and lodging with enough advance notice.
I'll lead you to the best spots based on your ability and push you to take on some challenges. We will ski wherever the conditions dictate and where we will feel the impact of the crowd the least. I'll do some coaching to level up to the challenge. On a multi day trip, I'll organize some skiing that will help you get better.
There are seemingly endless choices with ski equipment. Let's ski together and THEN talk equipment that can help you get the most out of your effort. I track trends, reviews and sales to help you get the most our of your purchases - at the right price. I'll cover skis, bindings, boots, and apparel with you as much or as little as you like.
